Working with the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, 13 vulnerable villages will build or rehabilitate community structures such as water reservoirs or community gardens which will lead to more reliable harvests.
The project will also train government staff on rapid assessments and logistics management for disasters. This year, the United States and Lao PDR are celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Comprehensive Partnership and this new program is part of our commitment under the Partnership.
USAID Country Representative to Laos Michael Ronning noted in his remarks, “this new program is one part of the United States’ efforts in Lao PDR to safeguard human lives, property and livelihoods in the face of future disasters. Many of these disasters result from the increasingly unpredictable impact of climate change.
Addressing the climate crisis is about more than the environment. Enhanced community resilience to and awareness of the climate crisis saves lives and contributes to sustainable global development.”
